The BSO is back with a bang

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra yesterday announced its 2009-2010 schedule.

"This season is going to be an all out exploration of our own musical roots," said Marin Alsop, the BSO's music director. "Finding shared cultural connections and celebrating our ethnic heritage are themes that infuse every aspect of the BSO's 2009-2010 season."

Among the highlights are three February performances by renowned violinist Yitzhak Pearlman, who will play and conduct.

The lineup at the Meyerhoff includes a Thursday night series in which guest conductors Robert Spano and Nicholas McGegan join Alsop. Masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Beethoven and Mozart along with contemporary works by Jennifer Higdon and John Adams are on the bill.

Friday night shows include Mussorgsky's popular "Pictures at an Exhibition," and new works by Dave Brubeck and David Little. Saturday and Sunday performances also are on tap.

Casual, SuperPop, and Family series round out the busy schedule. There are a number of subscription packages available, none of which have increased in price from last year.
