Soccer seems to have become quite the popular sport in Baltimore. July's friendly between AC Milan and Chelsea at M&T Bank Stadium was a sellout, and there are plans for a new minor-league franchise for the city.

But this news could top both of those stories. Baltimore is one of 27 cities currently vying to be a host for the World Cup if the U.S. is able to land the world's most popular sporting competition in 2018 or 2022.

According to the Baltimore Business Journal, the USA Bid Committee said it expects to announce the 18 finalist cities in the coming weeks. Those 18 cities will be part of the country's final bid package this summer to FIFA (the world governing body for soccer) for the 2018 or 2022 games. An announcement on the host countries is expected next December.
