Baseball's Back at Memorial Stadium

From Mike Unger, About.com GuideAugust 2, 2010

Follow me on:

That's the headline on a WBAL story about the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation's plan to build a youth baseball facility on 33rd Street.

The foundation broke ground on June 30 for a youth development park where home plate once stood at Memorial Stadium. It's the first of multiple parks planned for Baltimore City, and the Ripken Foundation, in partnership with the Y of Central Maryland, raised $1.5 million for the project.

The initiative is part of the foundation's "Swing for the Future" campaign, which was developed to provide at-risk youth in urban neighborhoods safe places to play and learn.

What a great idea on several different levels. Here's another: the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation is of course run in part by Cal Jr. Seems Junior has been having discussions with the Orioles about joining the organization is some capacity in the next few years. Hallelujah. Bring it on. The team clearly needs all the help it can get.

At least with this new facility quality baseball will be back in some part of Baltimore.
