Novice architect George A. Frederick won a design competition at age 22, making his ornate Second French Empire proposal the blueprint for Baltimore's seat of city government. Begun in 1867 and completed in 1875, City Hall's framework is made of cast iron, including its gold-covered dome.

After a more than century of use, City Hall was renovated. Although demolition was one option the city considered, it opted to do a complete overhaul of the building, restoring its ceremonial chambers and doubling its office space. During the renovation, the dome was taken apart and reassembled.

The public is welcome to visit and admire the architecture or examine the displays on Baltimore's art and history. The Mayor's Office and City Council meet here.
