Living in Baltimore County

Baltimore County's government provides numerous municipal services to County residents. Because none of the towns in Baltimore County are incorporated, all local taxes and services are provided by Baltimore County.

Residents of Baltimore County can find links to more information about schools, libraries, police and fire departments, trash and recycling pick up, parks and animal control.

Baltimore County Schools

Public schools in Baltimore County are divided into different districts for elementary, middle and high schools.

Transportation

While the Maryland Mass Transit Administration provides public transporation in Baltimore County (including buses trains and the light rail), the more than 2,600 miles of county's roads are maintained by the Bureau of Highways.

Parks

While there are Maryland state parks inside Baltimore County, these links pertain to parks administered by Baltimore County.

Public Safety Agencies

  • Police - enforces the laws and ordinances of the state and county
  • Fire Department - provides fire protection, emergency medical services, and fire prevention and safety education
  • Sheriff's Department - serves court-ordered (non-support) summons.
  • Department of Health - provide programs and services that promote and protect public health to individuals, families and the communities.
  • Animal Control - maintains County's animal shelter and pet adoption center, removes dead animals on county roads and deceased pets (free of charge), responds to calls about abused, neglected or dangerous animals.

Trash and Recycling Pick Up

Baltimore County provides curbside trash and recycling pick up for residents. It does not provide bulk trash pick up. It does provides this Reuse Directory to help residents find organizaions willing to haul away unwanted items.

Libraries

Founded in 1948 the Baltimore County Library System now has 17 branches plus one mobile library unit. The library fosters its mission to "provide innovative, quality services responding to the needs of our diverse community as we promote the love of reading, excel at providing resources to customers of all ages and create welcoming spaces for our community" through programming, books, periodicals and other printed materials, databases and computer access.

Social Services

The Department of Social Services oversees child protective services and the foster care system, assistance programs for the elderly and the County's homeless shelters. It has five district offices throughout Baltimore County.
