Annual or Special Events in 2008

Maryland State Fair

August 22- September 1
State Fair Grounds, Timonium

Travis Tritt (with Keith Anderson) headlines the fair this year, performing Friday August 29, But there's plenty more entertaiment both before and after his show. The night before Foreigner hits the stage. And all week you'll find rides, horse racing, animal shows, "paintless paintball," and even pig racing.

Defenders Day Weekend and Fireworks

September 12-14
Fort McHenry

On Friday evening, the Fort McHenry Guard sails from the fort to the Inner Harbor, where they parade through the streets en route to the Star-Spangled Banner House, where they retrieve a 30’x42’ replica of the flag that inspired the "Star-Spangled Banner." Then the band of historical re-enactors sails back to the Fort. Saturday and Sunday various programs go on at the fort throughout the day. Saturday evening there's a concert and fireworks.

Kids Fest 2008

September 13-14, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily
B&O Railroad Museum

Kids love trains, but on this weekend they'll find even more to do at the B&O. Shake things up with musical guest Milkshake! or hop in the Moon Bounce. Little ones can take a ride on the kiddie train and the whole family can board for a ride on the historic first mile of railroad track in the nation.

Anne Arundel County Fair

Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, 1450 General's Highway (Route 178) Crownsville

Among the attractions at the fair are carnival rides, games, animal exhibits, monster trucks, pony rides, garden tractor pulls, pig races, pie-eating contests, a talent show and live music.

Baltimore Book Festival

September 26-28 Mount Vernon Place

"The City That Reads" celebrates the literary arts by showcasing booksellers, book-related products and literary-oriented programs at this annual festival. In 2008, the roster of more than 200 authors includes Dr. Cornel West, Naomi Wolf, Walter Mosley, Michael Ian Black, Mark McEwen, Chef Martin Yan, Iyanla Vanzant, Daniel Mark Epstein and Omar Tyree. New this year are the Radical Bookfair Pavilion, which brings together the best of radical, independent and DIY Publishing, and School of Lit, a showcase of faculty and students from local colleges and universities.
