Great Tastes Culinary Expo 2008

What:

For the second year, Baltimore is hosting this February event that is a foodie's fantasy.

The culinary expo features more than 150 exhibits of the kitchens and kitchen gear, 200 different wines and spirits and tastings many Baltimore-area restaurants. Visitors to the expo will find tasting booths and interactive cooking demonstrations with the celebrity chefs plus more than 20 interactive seminars in five different areas.

Among the celebrity chefs performing cooking demonstrations are Warren Brown of Food Network’s Sugar Rush, Maria Liberati, author of The Basic Art of Italian Cooking and Michael Midgley from Bravo Network’s Top Chef, as well as locals Tony Foreman of Cinghiale, chef and culinary writer John Shields of Gertrude's and Christopher Paternotte of VIN Restaurant in Towson.

Other events scheduled for the weekend, but separate from the expo, include a cocktail reception, dinner at Da Mimmo and a beer and oyster feast at Clipper City Brewing. Scroll down for details.

This downtown hotel not far from Mount Vernon is the site of the event. However, expo attendees who plan to stay overnight in Baltimore may also want to check out Inner Harbor hotels.

Tickets:

$50.00 in advance, $60.00 at the door - includes admission, a souvenir wine glass, unlimited wine and spirits sampling, gourmet cooking demos on the main stage, interactive seminars on the demo stage and unlimited sampling at restauarant tastings
$20, designated driver - sames as above without wine glass, alcohol samplings or interactive seminars

Expo Seminars and Events with Additional Fees:

In addition to the above events outside the Great Tastes Expo, several events that take place during the expo may involve additional fees.
    VIP Seminar Package
For an additional $30 you may purchase the VIP Package, which guarantees seating in any seminar as well as get special front-row seating at the Main Stage.
    Great Tastes Kids Kitchen Class
10-11 a.m.
Chef Nancy Longo of Pierpoint Restaurant teaches budding chefs about pot stickers, egg rolls and tempura veggies during this hands-on, interactive seminar. Tickets include the cooking seminar, a take-home, mini cooking kit, chef’s hat, apron and a copy of Kitchen Playdates by Lauren Bank Deen and recipes from Longo.A parent or guardian must be present during seminar.

    "Easy Appetizers- Five Steps of Less"
And while these folks aren't celebrity chefs, these local media personalities will compete in an “Omelet Challenge” to see who can whip up the best eggy concoctions. The top three will win a monetary prize for the charity of their choice. They include Jessica Kartalija and Bernedette Woods of WJZ-TV, Sarah Caldwell of WBAL-TV, and Maria Dennis of Mix 106.5/WMAR-TV.
