Defenders' Day, September 12, commemorates Baltimore's successful defense against British invaders and the writing of the "Star-Spangled Banner" in the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The Star-Spangled Weekend is three days of events at Fort McHenry, with the grand ceremony on Saturday including a symbolic ship-to-shore bombardment, a concert and fireworks.
The Star-Spangled Weekend is Fort McHenry National Monument and Shrines flagship event. A three-day encampment and extravaganza with more than 100 War of 1812 reenactors, parades, military bands, fireworks, a symbolic ship-to-shore bombardment and more.
Defenders' Day Weekend 2009 is September 11-13. Fireworks are Sept. 12 around 9 p.m.
Friday Events
A Friday evening ceremonial procession of War of 1812 soldiers from the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House to the Inner Harbor, followed by a ceremony at the amphitheater. After the ceremony the reenactors will board sailing boats and return with the 30x42 replica flag to Fort McHenry.
Saturday Evening
Program begins at 6 p.m. Features a concert, a musket firing tactical demonstration with volunteer reenactors from all over the country (narrated), a symbolic ship-to-shore bombardment and evening fireworks show.
Saturday and Sunday
Activities include childrens programs, historic boats, military encampments/demonstrations and a privateers auction of captured goods.
