Looking to get out of town? Baltimore is within easy reach of a wide range of weekend getaway options. From big cities to seaside towns, here are some of the best places to escape.

Note: Trips are arranged in order of distance by car from downtown Baltimore.

Eastern Shore
Distance from Central Baltimore by Car: 70+ miles
The east side of the Chesapeake Bay is known as the "Eastern Shore," and is full of charming towns, sandy beaches, and natural areas. Go pony watching at Assateague Island (150 miles away), catch some waves in Ocean City (150 miles away), or go antiquing in St. Michaels (70 miles away). Other options within Maryland include Chestertown and Cambridge, while Chincoteague Island, Tangier Island, Onancock and Cape Charles are across the border in Virginia.

Shenandoah National Park
Distance from Central Baltimore by Car: 160 miles
One of the United States' great national parks is just a few hours away from Baltimore. Make the drive and you won't be disappointed: it would be hard not to find a feeling of peace amongst the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are full of wildflowers in the spring and impressive foliage in the fall. Don't forget to make a side trip to Luray Caverns, an underground maze of stalactites and stalagmites.

Deep Creek Lake
Distance from Central Baltimore by Car: 179 miles
Deep Creek Lake is the largest inland body of water in the state. The manmade lake makes for a great place to boat, water ski, or wakeboard, and is full of freshwater fish and aquatic birds. Nearby to Deep Creek Lake is Wisp Resort, a ski resort.

Colonial Williamsburg
Distance from Central Baltimore by Car: 192 miles
Step back into time at Colonial Williamsburg, the largest living history museum in the United States. Once England's oldest, largest, and wealthiest colony is represented through 88 original buildings and hundreds of other homes, shops, and public buildings.

Swallow Falls State Park
Distance from Central Baltimore by Car: 195 miles
Known for having Maryland's highest free falling waterfall within its bounds, Swallow Falls State Park makes a great weekend camping getaway. Besides making use of the picnic, playground, and hiking trails, you can camp amongst the same hemlock trees Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone used to sleep under.
