To encourage homeowners to plant trees on their properties Baltimore County has initiated the Growing Home campaign, which provides information and education about tree planting, plus $10 off a tree purchased at selected nurseries in Baltimore County and Baltimore City.
The discount, which runs through December 2008, applies to a wide variety of both native and non-native trees with a retail value of at least $25. However, species that are considered invasive are not included. Download tree coupon.
Of course, trees add beauty to your yard, but there are other benefits as well. According to the Growing Home campaign, benefits of trees for homeowners and their communities include:
- When a yard and its neighborhood are beautified with trees, property values can increase by 15 percent or more.
- Trees save energy in the summer. Shade from trees reduces cooling costs. Strategically located trees can reduce air-conditioning costs by 15 to 30 percent.
- Trees save energy in the winter by acting as windbreaks. An effective windbreak can lower heating bills up to 30 percent.
- Animals need trees to provide food and habitat.
- Trees clean the air and help prevent climate change. Trees return pure oxygen to the air and help offset greenhouse gases.
- By absorbing many harmful pollutants, such as pesticides and fertilizers, trees clean the water. They also slow storm water runoff.
- Trees protect and enrich the soil by holding it in place with their root system and adding nutrients each fall with their leaves.
- The reason for planting - Is it to provide shade, seasonal color, wildlife habitat, windbreak or privacy?
- Size and location - Would a large, medium, or small tree fit best in scale with the house and existing landscaping? Are there overhead or below ground wires or utilities where the tree will grow?
- Growing conditions Sun, soil type and drainage of the proposed site should all be considered. Also will the tree have to be tolerant of urban conditions?
