A regionally focused art museum that showcases work with a social or political component, this museum hosts artists-in-residence from all over the world. They come here to work in collaboration with local artists or institutions. The museum describes its work as "thought-provoking exhibitions, innovative programming, and unique collaborations." In spring 2007 the exhibit CELL PHONE: Art and the Mobile Phone included a chandelier made of cell phones all running a short film.
Once described as the "museum without walls" the Contemporary Museum hosted exhibits in other Baltimore cultural institutions such as the Walters Art Museum and the BMA, during its first decade. But in 1999, the museum secured permanent exhibit space in what was once the Mutual Life Building in Mount Vernon.
