Looney's Pub

By Laureen Miles Brunelli, About.com

Ask just about anyone in the Canton neighborhood where to find the best sports bar and you probably won’t find too much equivocation. In virtually all cases, the answer will come back: Looney’s. At the corner of O’Donnell and Linwood streets, Looney’s has been serving up great beer, food and televised sports action since 1993.

The Bar:
Bar patrons at Looney’s have all the numbers working in their favor: 25 beers on tap and more than 45 televisions, including four big-screen TVs and several flat-screen plasma models at the downstairs and upstairs bars.

The first floor bar is lined with dark wood and exposed bricks and oversized windows are left wide open during the spring, summer and fall months. Upstairs, a larger bar does double duty as a rec room of sorts, with a pair of pool tables, a foosball table and, of course, more TVs pumping out the games.

On tap at either bar is a rotating selection of brews such as Bass, Guinness, Newcastle, Degroens Marzen and Sierra Nevada. Both bars have their pros and cons: downstairs has more of a pub feel to it, but it can get elbow-to-elbow crowded on weekends; upstairs is generally far less crowded, but it’s smokier.

The Restaurant:
You might think that because it’s primarily a sports bar that the menu at Looney’s is an afterthought. You’d be wrong. Pub-style fare is a cut above here. Wings come in three varieties—BBQ, cajun and jerk—and big baskets of shrimp come simmered in beer and encrusted in Old Bay seasoning. The burgers are overstuffed, greasy and delicious.

So, what could possibly go wrong? Well, the service. While the wait staff is uniformly well-versed in the menu and amiable, the wait time is uniformly long. Take it from someone who knows, if you go to Looney’s for dinner with young children make sure you bring extra coloring books. The wait is long, but it’s generally worth it. Prices are squarely in the moderate range, with appetizers maxing out at $6.25 and entrees ranging from $5.75–$19.95.
