Poe's Final Resting Place

Poe's Grave

Poe is buried in of Baltimore’s Westminster Hall and Burying Ground (519 W Fayette St.,410-706-2072). On a cold wet day shortly after his death, Poe was laid to rest in his grandfather’s plot. In November 1875, Poe was reinterred in a new grave in the same cemetery with the remains of his mother-law. The ceremony was attended by poet Walt Whitman. Ten years later, Virginia Poe's body was brought to Baltimore and laid with Poe and her mother.

Westminster Presbyterian Church, a gothic-style edifice was built on arches over the older burying ground. It is now part of the University of Maryland Law School.

The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum

In a home where Poe once lived, this city-owned museum on the West Side has a small collection of Poe memorabilia, including glassware and china belonging to Poe's foster father, Poe's sextant and traveling desk and a reproduction of the only known portrait of Poe's wife, Virginia.

The museum holds special events during Halloween and to celebrate Poe’s birthday.
