Political Rise:
When inaugurated as Mayor of Baltimore on January 18, 2007, Sheila Dixon became the first woman to hold the position. She was elevated to the position from City Council president when Martin OMalley was sworn in as governor. When elected City Council president in 1999, she was the first African-American woman to hold the position. She has stated she plans to run for mayor in the November 2007 election.
She began her career in politics in 1986 when she was elected to the Baltimore City State Central Committee to represent the 40th Legislative District. In 1987, she won a seat on the Baltimore City Council representing the 4th Council District.
Early Years:
A lifelong Baltimore City resident, Dixon was born and raised in the Ashburton neighborhood of West Baltimore. Her father was a car salesman, and her mother a homemaker and a community activist. She earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Towson University and her masters in educational management from Johns Hopkins. She has worked as elementary school teacher and as an adult education instructor. For 17 years, she was an international trade specialist with the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.
