Trade in your pencil and calculator for a computer, and file your Maryland taxes online.
Filing taxes online means that your return is sent via the Internet to the correct government agency. Both federal and Maryland income tax returns may be filed online.
However, there are several ways to do this.
Tax Software
You may purchase software, which calculates your return and, for a fee, will file it with the IRS. You can upgrade most tax software, such as TurboTax and TaxCut, to allow you to calculate and file your state return too.
The list of approved tax software in Maryland in this article points out limitations of each type for filing a Maryland return.

iFile
Maryland's Internet tax filing system allows online electronic filing of resident or non-resident personal income tax returns that use the most common schedules and forms. With this system you calculate and file your state taxes online. However, if you wish, you may calculate your taxes on paper before using iFile.
To use iFile, you need:- A completed federal return.
- Copies of your W2, W2G, 1099R and 1099G forms.
- Microsoft Internet Explorer (vsn 4.0 or greater) or Netscape Navigator (vsn 4.0 or greater) with javascript and cookies enabled.
Some reasons you would NOT be eligible to use iFile include:- Filing a Form 500CR or Form 515 for nonresident local tax.
- Amending a return that was previously filed on paper or another electronic source.
- Amending a nonresident Form 505.
- Filing Married Filing Separately or Head of Household and claiming your spouse as a dependent taxpayer.
- Filing more than the iFile limit of these forms: W2, W2, 502CR, 1099G and 1099R.
