In addition to the credits listed below, Maryland residents who paid income tax to another state may be entitled to a tax credit on their Maryland return.
In most cases, no credit may be claimed for tax paid on wages earned in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Maryland has a reciprocal agreement with these states, and Maryland residents who work in these states only pay Maryland taxes. However, there are exceptions, so consult with a tax professional. Also if these states collected taxes in error, you could be due a refund.
Other Maryland tax credits include:
- Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit
If you claimed this credit on your federal income tax return, you may be eligible for a Maryland tax credit.
- Quality Teacher Incentive Credit
Public school teachers who paid tuition for graduate-level courses to maintain certification may be entitled to a credit.
- Heritage Structure Rehabilitation Tax Credits
Substantial expenses incurred in a 24-month period to rehabilitate a certified heritage structure in Maryland may generate a tax credit.
- Long-Term Care Insurance Credit
If you purchase a long-term care insurance for yourself or certain members of your family, you may be eligible for a credit of up to $500.
- Neighborhood Stabilization Credit
Some homeowners in Waverly or Landsdowne in Baltimore City or in the Hillendale, Northbrook, Pelham Woods or Taylor/Dartmouth sections of Baltimore County may earn a tax credit.
- Maryland Earned Income Tax Credit
If you claimed it on your federal return, you may be entitled to a Maryland earned income tax credit equal to 50 percent of the federal credit.
- Poverty-Level Credit
If your income is below the poverty level, this credit can applied against your state and local income tax.
- Preservation and Conservation Easement Credit
Taxpayers who donate a perpetual easement to the Maryland Environmental Trust or the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation may be entitled to a tax credit.
- Aquaculture Oyster Float Credit
purchasers of new aquaculture oyster floats on may be entitled to a tax credit of up to $500.
