The centerpiece of Baltimore's old-fashioned public market system, the giant Westside market house is home to more than 140 vendors hawking everything from crabcakes and candy to sushi and soul food.

The market hosts musicians during the lunch hour, giving it a festive air. And some of its annual events, like the Preakness Crab Derby, have become cherished Baltimore traditions.

Tourists and locals alike visit to market for the dining options like Faidley's Seafood, which is famous for its crabcakes.

    Black History Month

The market celebrates Black History Month every day each February. Children from Baltimore City Schools perform skits, songs and dances based on African, Caribbean, jazz, blues, Gospel, or big band themes during lunch time. Also visual displays teach about black history.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's pachyderms march up Eutaw Street from the 1st Mariner Arena to Lexington Market's parking lot. Thousands of adoring fans come to enjoy the live music, circus clowns and, of course, the elephants. The gentle giants are treated to a vegetarian buffet of 1,100 oranges, 1,000 apples, 500 heads of lettuce, 700 bananas, 400 pears and 500 carrots.

History:

Established in 1782, Lexington Market is the world's largest, continuously running marketplace. Farmers began selling their goods on Lexington Market's site after Colonel John Eager Howard, a hero of the American Revolution, gave permission for a market on a pasture in his family's estate.. The market is named for the Revolutionary War's Battle of Lexington.

Farmers in wagons and merchants bartering grain, livestock and other goods converged on the site to create a makeshift market until 1803 when the first shed was erected.

By 1822, the busy market was well known. U.S. Attorney General William Wirt pointed out in a letter "60,000 people draw the daily supplies from (Lexington Market); which is more than twice as many people as there are in Washington, Alexandria and Richmond."

In the first of a series of mid 20th-century fires in Baltimore public markets, Lexington Market burned to the ground in 1949. It was quickly rebuilt with the proceeds of a bond issue.
