Guide Review - Burritos En Fuego

The staff and management at Burritos En Fuego apparently know their clientele very well. Located in bar-happy Fells Point, the restaurant dishes up big portions of Mexican comfort food without cutting into bar patrons drinking money too much. On that score, the place succeeds. But it never really rises above that baseline.

On the bright side, the taco salad with chicken ($7.00) was the star. The meat was subtly seasoned and cooked to nearly falling-apart perfection. And the accompanying guacamole, though a tad heavy on the citrus for some in our party, added a colorful and tasty zing on the side.

The taco salad with steak ($7.75) was completely bland. The lettuce and tomato were fresh, but the black beans seemed to lack any seasoning. And the cubed steak, like the beans, was easily overpowered by the mild lettuce and tomato.

The beef burrito ($6.50), stuffed with the same flavorless ingredients, was similar. The great lump of a thing, presented in tin foil like a baked potato, was certainly filling. But I found myself stealing the previously mentioned guacamole from a friends’ plate to spread on top just so I knew I had something in my mouth.

And the best thing that could be said about the rice was that it had a pleasant yellow color. While appealing to the eye, though, the rice was totally tasteless and downright mushy.

Finally, you don’t read too many restaurant reviews that make points on grammar. This is the exception. For a restaurant that prides itself on being part of the fabric of Fells Point, Burritos En Fuego deserves a Colbert Report “Wag of the Finger” for putting an apostrophe in the neighborhood’s name everywhere it’s mentioned on its menu and Website.
