Baltimore swimmer Michael Phelps won 8 medals in the Athens Olympics in 2004 (6 gold and 2 bronze), but was one short of matching the record 7 gold medals Mark Spitz earned in 1972. In the 2008 Beijing Games, where he’ll compete in 8 events, he gets another chance. Of course, Spitz is undoubtably on Phelps' mind, but there are other Olympic record-setting opportunities at the 2008 Beijing Games.

About.com's Guide to Swimming Mat Luebbers says Phelps might be "the greatest all-around swimmer ever. Ever."

Already, Phelps set world records in the 400-meter and 200-meter individual medley events during the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Neb. in July 2008.

Phelps' 6-foot, 4-inch frame is built for speed. The 195-pound swimmer has an unusually long reach with an arm span of 6 foot, 7 inches. His extra-long torso allows him to stay high on the water, and his size-14 feet give him a powerful kick.

Swiming Achievements

While the 2004 Games in Athens is where Phelps made his initial big Olympic splash, so to speak, Phelps' Olympic history starts in the Sydney Games in 2000. At 15, the Rodgers Forge native was the youngest male on the U.S. team. He finished fifth in 200-meter butterfly event.

From then on, his career has taken off.
